Palestinian Youth Are Highly Educated, but Have Poor Career Prospects

Every year, 40,000 Palestinians graduate from the 14 universities across the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Despite the near 100% literacy rate and being among the highest educated in the MENA region, their career prospects are gloomy. With a youth unemployment rate estimated to be between 50 and 70%, many Palestinians are forced to seek employment in unrelated fields like construction, farming, or other blue-collar work, often inside Israel or illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Despite 150,000 work permits being issued to Palestinians in 2023, The Times of Israel estimates that a staggering 40,000 Palestinians work illegally (without permits).

The result? A fragile, dependent Palestinian economy, highly volatile working conditions for Palestinian (male) workers, and women often being left with little to no opportunities. The issue at hand is not a question of survival but of dignity.

Olives & Heather is one initiative amongst many attempting to rectify this!
